Each year in the beautiful Tarragona region of Catalonia, Spain, a unique and amazing event takes place. The “Concurs de Castells” is one of the most incredible human competitions in the world. The competition dates all the way back to the 18th century and is a massive part of the family tradition in Catalonia. A group of people known as “colles” are awarded points for how well they build their structure, the height, and most importantly how they deconstruct their “castell”. Groups can sometimes consist of more than 800 people. The most amazing part is that the tops of towers are completed by young children between the ages of 7-12 wearing helmets. The towers are an incredible symbol of human strength and the power of community. Watch the video above for some amazing footage of one of the competitions.
