Here are some of the adventures we went on in Costa Rica:
Hiking in Arenal Volcano National Park
If one of your goals in Costa Rica is to capture the quintessential beauty of the jungle, lined with an incredible volcanic backdrop, making a trip to Arenal National Park should absolutely be on your
itinerary. The park is located near the town of La Fortuna and you can stop for breakfast if you’re heading to the park early. It’s a beautiful small town with some shopping and restaurants. The park is filled with all types of hikes, some more challenging than others but because of the relatively flat terrain, the trails are suitable for hikers of all levels including children. To get the best views of the park find the Los Heliconias trail and follow it to the lookout point. It’s well worth the hike and the panoramic views are breathtaking.
White Water Rafting in the Pacuare River
What a treat this was! The Pacuare River is widely regarded as one of white water ratings most exciting and scenic rivers. Located in the Caribbean of Costa Rica, the Pacuare River confines the Mountain of Talamanca, the home to the native Indians of Cabecar and an immense variety of flora and fauna. At first, it may be difficult to keep your eyes on the river because the surrounding landscapes make you feel like you’re floating through paradise. But soon the adventure starts and the rapids begin to pick up the intensity. Everyone absolutely loved this trip and after every set of rapids the entire group was laughing and high fiving. Ther are people who travel to Costa Rica just for this experience. If you are planning a Costa Rica trip, do not leave this off the list! What a day!
A lot of people will tell you to avoid San Jose and to some extent, it’s not hard to understand why. There is a ton of traffic and at times it can be congested, but this city has so much charm and character that you’d be making a big mistake if you skipped it. One of the best things is that all of the tiny neighborhoods are so close that it is extremely easy to navigate by foot. There is a new found excitement surrounding the craft cocktail scene that pairs perfectly with some of the traditional dishes of Costa Rica. Everyone we talked to told us we should try the local classic called chifrijo, a combination of rice, pork, beans, and lemon or some plantain tortillas with mashed beans and pico de gallo. We ended up at a casual eatery called La Oveja Negra and it did not disappoint. The chifrijo absoutely lived up to the hype. We also ended up trying some locally brewed beers and we absolutely loved a few. Our favorite was a beer made by Cerveceria del Centro a fairly large craft brewery in Costa Rica. They have a pilsner called Ambar that we looked for everywhere we went. We had no idea that Costa Rica had such a thriving craft beer scene and next time we will make sure to visit a few breweries.
